The Product Leaders Compass has evolved over many years of working with product people across industries and geographies. It is the result of synthesizing patterns from hundreds of conversations, workshops, courses and coaching sessions with product leaders at all levels. The compass is designed to be a practical tool that helps product leaders understand the different dimensions of their accountabilities, how they relate to each other and to keep them in balance.
Horizontal and vertical development
Horizontal development teaches you new moves. Vertical development changes the game you're capable of playing. The compass defines eight core competencies, which are being developed both horizontally (skills) and vertically (capacities) in our Product Leadership Development Programs.
8 core competency areas on three levels
The compass identifies 139 specific skills (horizontal) and capabilities (vertical) across these eight areas.
Level 1: From Product Owner to Product Leader
49 competencies to fulfill the role with confidence and grow beyond product ownership, take over real responsibility for a product and work effectively with agile teams, delivering real value. Lead development with clarity, diagnostic insight and actionable direction. Including four foundational competencies.
Level 2: From operative to strategic
56 competencies - both horizontal and vertical - to strategically steer product development, manage the development process using key metrics, and work more effectively in your leadership role.
Level 3: Becoming a catalyst leader
34 competencies, mostly focusing on inner capabilities of a leader to lead leaders, grow high performing product teams and act as a catalyst for a future-oriented organizational culture, enabling leaders to transform and effectively lead their product organization.
